Nordic's Power Management ICs (PMICs) are designed with low power consumption and compatibility with our products first in mind. Building on years of experience of integrating power management into our SoCs.
Built-in power management on SoCs
Ever since the release of the first SoC (System-on-Chip) from Nordic Semiconductor, our focus have been on delivering wireless connectivity with the lowest possible power consumption. This has resulted in us becoming a market leader in the Bluetooth Low Energy space, but we've also gained a lot of knowledge about how to power our devices efficiently.
As an example of this our flagship low power short range wireless SoC, the nRF5340 contains internal regulators to enable direct battery operation. It also has enough overhead to allow powering other components like a sensor with about 10 mA of current. But internal power management in SoCs also comes with some limitations, the smaller manufacturing process that the nRF5340 is built on is not optimal for power management at higher load capacities.
Dedicated Power Management ICs
By selecting a larger process for a dedicated Power Management IC (PMIC) you achieve better performance and efficiency, and this is why a lot of applications will need a dedicated PMIC for power delivery. PMICs also may offer additional features like charging circuits and battery management, drivers for LED indicators, overvoltage protections and USB detection capabilities. With our focus on low power wireless connectivity, we have gained experience in not only how to make efficient SoCs, but also how to power them efficiently. This is a knowledge we want to utilize to the fullest.
The first ever standalone Power Management IC to emerge from the Nordic Semiconductor lineup of products, the nPM1100, built on the experience of integrating power management into our SoCs. Truly wireless devices needs batteries, and batteries needs charging. That's why it feels natural for us to offer a complete solution of devices to enable you to make completely wireless products, wirelessly enabled by a Nordic SoC - powered by a Nordic PMIC.
